The story of Yulanyuan Park （West Gate）

Yulanyuan Park’s West Gate stands in Dongcheng District near the line of Chongwenmen, the old southeastern gate of Beijing’s inner city. Chongwenmen was part of Beijing’s city wall, and in the 1960s the gate and much of the wall were torn down to make room for Beijing’s second ring road.

That is the main historical frame here: you are looking at a park entrance in an area shaped by the disappearance of a city gate and wall, rather than at a monument with its own recorded history. So the most useful thing to notice is the relationship between the present landscape and the former fortifications nearby.

If you are orienting yourself on foot, this west side is the approach to remember when you move through the park’s edge and back out toward the older urban grid. The old gate stood immediately south of the old Beijing Legation Quarter, so this part of the city sits close to a layer of Beijing history that has largely vanished from view.

For a visitor, the practical cue is simple: treat the west gate as a starting point for reading the neighborhood, then look outward for the remaining traces of the former wall line.
