The story of VR Bengaluru

VR Bengaluru is a mixed-use retail development in Whitefield, Bangalore, and the number that gives you the scale straight away is its gross floor area of 600,000 square feet (56,000 m2). It is not only a shopping center: the complex also includes a hotel, a multiplex, commercial spaces, and customisable collaborative working spaces for start-ups and entrepreneurs.

The most striking thing here is how many different functions are stacked into one place. The centre consists of The Hive, a co-working space; The Waverly, Hotel & Residences; and the SkyDeck, an activated rooftop with a temperature-controlled pool, a jogging track and an open-air LED screen. South India's first H&M store was launched here in 2016, which gives you a sense of how this site has been used to attract flagship retail as well as everyday shoppers.

This center is owned, developed and operated by Virtuous Retail South Asia Pte Ltd. That matters because it shows VR Bengaluru as a purpose-built contemporary development rather than a remade historic structure. If you are looking for the heritage landscape around it, the neighbourhood around you, Garudacharpalya, lies along the Whitefield road in the eastern part of Bangalore; the centre itself sits in a very urban retail corridor.

Standing here, what you can actually look for is the way the project combines shopping, work, lodging and leisure in one compound. The co-working spaces are part of the public face of the place just as much as the retail arcade, and the rooftop amenities make the upper level an important part of the visitor experience. The multiplex is also notable for having the largest Gold Class in India along with an IMAX.

There is another layer of activity tied to the broader Bengaluru area: in January 2021, The Mythic Society, Bengaluru, embarked on the Bengaluru Inscriptions 3D Digital Conservation Project, aiming to digitally preserve, in high-resolution 3D, all stone inscriptions in the districts of Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Ramanagara in Karnataka. Preservation efforts in Bengaluru include discovery, documentation, digital preservation and public awareness, because rapid urbanization, neglect and weathering have made many inscriptions vulnerable. That work is not about this building specifically, but it does show the wider city in which a place like VR Bengaluru exists.

So the thing to notice here is the modern layering: retail at ground level, work and hotel functions inside the same complex, and a rooftop designed as another destination. If you want the simplest way to read the place, think of it as a commercial hub built to keep people moving between shopping, staying, working and spending time here in one visit.
