The story of Todabhim

Todabhim is a city and municipality in Karauli district, and this is the tahsil town you are standing in.

Its best-known historical claim is that Bodamalji Ushara established Todabhim in 302 AD. He is named as coming from the Ushara clan of the Meena tribe, and the story of the place then shifts to the Meenas of Jorwal gotra, who later defeated the Meenas of Ushahara gotra and took over the rule here. Todabhim is also described as a prominent historical site because Shri Jagannath Singh Ji’s family is believed to have ruled it for over 500 years.

That gives the town a layered political history rather than a single monument story. The name that recurs here is the Meena community, and the place is remembered through changing lineages and local rule over a long span. EBNW Story adds that Todabhim’s historical prominence also links it to the Meena Kings, and places it at one point under the dominion of the Matsya Kingdom, though that belongs to the town’s wider historical setting rather than to any one building in front of you.

Today Todabhim is the headquarters of Todabhim sub division, tehsil and C&RD block of Karauli district, so it still functions as an administrative centre as well as a historic settlement. The town covers 14.23 square kilometre.

If you are arriving or leaving, the practical access points are straightforward: Todabhim is accessible by road and by rail. Balaji mod bus stop on National Expressway 21 is 7 km away. Bus services run to Agra and Jaipur, and taxis and autorickshaws are available. The major railheads named for the town are Bandikui Jn on the Delhi-Jaipur section and Hindaun city on the Delhi-Kota section of Indian railways, both about 45 km away. Jaipur international airport is the nearest airport.

What you are really looking at here is a town whose identity comes from administration and remembered rulership rather than a single surviving shrine or palace.
