The story of Sri Chamarajendra Park

Sri Chamarajendra Park is the city park you’re standing in, better known as Cubbon Park, and its most striking fact is how long it has been part of Bangalore’s public life: it was established in 1870 and now has walking paths, landscaped gardens, and play areas.

South Tourism describes Cubbon Park, officially Sri Chamarajendra Park, as sprawling over 300 acres, and says it began with 100 acres before later expansion. That same publication says the park was established in 1870 by the then acting commissioner of Bangalore, Sri John Meade, and that it was initially known as “Meade’s Park.” It also notes later renovations and a renaming in 1927 to Sri Chamarajendra Park.

Around you, the park is treated as a major green space in the city centre, and South Tourism says it holds more than 6000 trees. It also points to nearby sights such as the Cubbon Park Museum, Attara Kacheri, the Sheshadri Iyer Memorial Park, the Bangalore Aquarium, the Central Public Library, the Government Museum, Venkattapa Art Gallery, and the Technological Museum.

If you’re visiting today, it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and closed on Monday. The official website is maintained by Bengaluru Urban district.
