The story of Shri Radha Raman Temple, Vrindavan
You’re standing at the Sri Radha Raman Temple, a Hindu temple in Vrindavan where Krishna is worshiped as Radha Ramana. What makes it especially striking is that the temple houses the original Shaligram deity of Krishna alongside goddess Radha, and this image is described as the oldest image remaining in Vrindavan for the longest continuous period.
The temple was established over 500 years ago by Gopala Bhatta Goswami, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan and a close associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The name Radha Raman means the lover of Sri Radha, which fits the way the deity is understood here: as a singular form representing both Radha and Krishna in one murti. The temple is also counted among the Seven most revered ancient temples of Vrindavan, alongside Radha Vallabh Temple, Radha Damodar Temple, Radha Madanmohan Temple, Radha Govindji Temple, Radha Shyamsundar Temple and Radha Gokulnandan Temple.
A strong part of the story here is the link between worship and the deity’s appearance. Gopala Bhatta Gosvami came to Vrindavana at the age of thirty, and after Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s disappearance he felt intense separation from the Lord. In the account preserved for this temple, he was instructed in a dream to go to Nepal. There he bathed in the famous Kali-Gandaki River and found twelve Shaligrama Shilas in his waterpot. The temple’s own tradition says that in 1542 AD, on the full moon day of Vaishakha, Shri Radha Raman Ji appeared as a self-manifested deity. The temple was built in samwat 1645.
The place you are looking at is not just a single shrine but a close-knit cluster of Goswami residences with the main Haveli Temple at its core. That makes the setting important: the temple is strategically concealed amidst private residences, which gives the complex a different feel from a grand open monument. It is also described as one of the oldest examples of this haveli-temple typology and the first of the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya to have come up in Vrindavan.
The historic image here matters to worshippers because it has remained in Vrindavan through the iconoclastic raids by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb during the 17th century, when other images were removed to safer places outside the city. Near by is the samadhi of Shri Gopal Bhatt Ji, who established the temple and the service of Shri Radharaman Ji.
For a practical visit, the temple is open every day from 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and again from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. If you come early, you’ll join the day’s first worship hours; if you come later, you can return for the evening opening. The temple is also listed with an official website at https://www.shriradharaman.com/.
Conservation work is ongoing here. The temple has been described as having generally good structural integrity, with attention focused on structural stabilization, repair of intricate sandstone carvings, fresco restoration, and drainage issues to prevent water damage. Traditional lime mortar is used in restoration work, and the building is constructed primarily of durable red sandstone. No formal archaeological excavations have been conducted at the temple itself, but records note the deity’s discovery during excavations for a nearby temple tank in the 16th century, around which the temple was subsequently built.
As you stand here, the main thing to look for is the relationship between the sanctum, the original deity, and the surrounding Goswami residences. This is a living worship place, a historic house-temple, and one of Vrindavan’s most important sacred sites all at once.
