The story of Sanganeri Gate

Sanganeri Gate is one of the gates of the historic walled Pink City, and this one has three archways in a large, decorated structure that still works as a public thoroughfare.

The gate sits on the southern side of Jaipur’s walled city, opening into Bapu Bazaar. Jaipur Unveiled says Sanganeri Gate dates back to the 18th century and was built during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. TasteYatra calls it a working three-hundred-year-old doorway and describes it as the merchants’ door, through which printed cloth arrived from the south. That fits its name too: Sanganeri Gate means the gateway towards Sanganer.

TasteYatra also places it as the third gate of the southern rampart, part of the fortification raised after Sawai Jai Singh II founded his new capital on the plain in 1727. Around here, the gate is not just something to photograph; it is a route into the trade streets. Johari Bazaar shops nearby generally trade from about 11:00 to 21:00, and the gate itself is accessible 24 hours.

If you look closely, the thing to notice is how the three openings keep the building readable as a passage as much as a landmark.
