The story of Sanganeri Gate

Sanganeri Gate is one of the gates of the historic walled Pink City, and it is a large, decorated structure with 3 archways. That makes it part of Jaipur’s old defensive and planned urban layout, rather than a standalone monument.

Britannica says Jaipur is also known as the Pink City, and the gate sits within that historic walled city. On the practical side, it is open 24 hours every day, so you can see it at any time.

The publication Jaipur Unveiled says Sanganeri Gate dates back to the 18th century and was built during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. Chal Banjare says it was built in 1727 as part of Jaipur’s original fortified wall. The same publication describes it as a historic city gateway within the original defensive wall, opening into Bapu Bazaar and acting as a doorway toward Sanganer.

That gives you the main thing to look for here: the gate is both an entrance and a piece of the city wall. If you stand back a little, you can take in the three archways and the fortified massing of the structure. It remains an important heritage landmark in the city’s southern side, near busy market streets.
