Bengaluru Palace is a royal palace from the 19th century, and the first thing to notice is that it was modelled on Windsor Castle in England. You are looking at a Tudor Revival building with large fortified towers and turreted parapets, and the exterior walls are partly covered by plants. Inside, the palace has 34 rooms, a swimming pool, and interiors with intricate wood work, motifs, and various art pieces.

The palace was commissioned for the Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, the Maharaja of Mysore, in 1873. It stands on a 454 acres (184 ha) plot that belonged to John Garrett, a linguist and principal of the Central High School. The building was completed in 1878, and one account gives the cost as ₹1 million. Another published account says the land and original building belonged to Reverend John Garrett of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and that the residence later became the palace you see now. What makes the place especially interesting today is the way it still works as both a heritage site and a public venue. The palace is open for public viewing, and in recent years the grounds have hosted events and fairs. A published description also says cultural events and social functions, including marriage ceremonies, exhibitions, musical concerts, and sports events, have been held here, and that there is an amusement park, better known as Fun World, inside the palace complex. So this is not only a monument to look at from outside; it is a place that continues to be used.

If you walk around the exterior, the details worth stopping for are the fortified towers, the turreted parapets, and the way the wood structure and carvings carry the Tudor-style inspiration through the whole building. The palace is in Vasanth Nagar, about 5.3 km (3.3 mi) north of the city centre, and the area around it places it in the middle of Bengaluru’s bustle. One practical point: visiting hours are listed as 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM every day, and another visiting note gives 10 am to 5 pm, so it is wise to check before coming if you are planning a specific time.

The palace grounds have also become a place for performances and public gatherings, which gives the site a very different life from the private residence it began as. That mix of royal history and contemporary use is part of what people come for. An audio tour of one-hour duration is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Hindi and Kannada, which is useful if you want a fuller visit without a human guide.
