The story of Our Lady of the Miracles Cathedral, Kallianpur (Milagres Cathedral)
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Miracles at Kallianpur, known as Milagres Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church in Indo-Portuguese style, and it became a cathedral church in 2012. That status matters because the Milagres parish was elevated then, giving a new focus to the Konkani and South Canarese Christian people of the locality.
Kallianpur itself developed as a Christian settlement during the period of the Keladi Nayakas, and the church’s earliest history is tied to a land gift from Somashekara Nayaka I of the Ikkeris to local Christians. In 1678, the church was constructed by the Portuguese in Goa and Bombay and dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles. The same year is also given for the establishment of the Milagres Church as a result of a treaty between Raja Shivappa Nayaka of Bednore and the Portuguese in Goa and Bombay-Bassein.
The building you see today is not the original form of that church. It was rebuilt in 1881 AD, after the persecution of Mangalorean Christians at Seringapatam ended. That rebuilding fixed the cathedral in the form that now anchors the parish.
The church’s dedication to Our Lady of Miracles is central to its identity, and the statue of Our Lady of Milagres, Kallianpur is said to be miraculous. The place is therefore both a parish center and a cathedral for a wider Catholic community.
For a visitor, the most important things to notice are the cathedral status, the Indo-Portuguese character named for it, and the continuity between the 1678 foundation, the 1881 rebuilding, and the later elevation in 2012.
In brief
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Miracles, Indo-Portuguese; Catedral de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres (formerly a parish church as the Church of Our Lady of Miracles, Portuguese: Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres), is a Roman Catholic Cathedral situated at Kallianpur in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India.
The Milagres Church was established in 1678 as a result of a treaty between Raja Shivappa Nayaka (the Ikkeris) of Bednore and the Portuguese in Goa and Bombay-Bassein. The structure was rebuilt in its present form in 1881 AD, after the persecution of Mangalorean Christians at Seringapatam ended. The Milagres parish was elevated to the status of a cathedral church in 2012, giving a desirable fillip to the Konkani and South Canarese Christian people of the locality.
