The story of Noida

You’re standing in Noida, the city whose name expands to New Okhla Industrial Development Authority. It was established in 1976, and its story is a planning story first: a city created under the NCR planning strategy to decentralise growth from Delhi. That origin still shapes the way it reads on the ground, because this is one of India’s most systematically planned cities.

The setting matters. Noida lies in Gautam Buddha Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh, in the floodplain region between the Yamuna and the Hindon Rivers. That location, and the fact that it is part of the National Capital Region, have made it both a suburban extension and an economic engine. Gautam Buddha Nagar District, which includes Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA City, contributes over 10% to the Uttar Pradesh GSDP. Noida itself has grown into a prominent IT hub, with software development companies such as Microsoft, Arm Holdings, HCL, Samsung and Barclays, alongside electronics assembly, automotive production, logistics facilities and news broadcasting houses.

The city was set up under the UP Industrial Area Development Act, 1976 during the controversial Emergency period, and the initiative is linked to Sanjay Gandhi. Its administrative existence began on 17 April 1976, and that date is still marked as Noida Day. If you want the practical everyday sign of how the city was conceived, look at the roads around you: the layout is described as mostly a grid pattern, with main roads 6 lanes wide.

Noida’s scale is part of the point. As of August 2025, it accommodates approximately 11,000 industrial units. It is also classified as a special economic zone, and the Noida Authority is among the richest civic bodies in the country. The city has the highest per capita income in Uttar Pradesh, ahead of Lucknow. Those numbers help explain why the place feels less like a traditional town and more like a deliberately built urban system.

The city has also built a reputation around green cover. It is frequently ranked as one of India’s greenest cities, with over 50% green cover, including botanica gardens and biodiversity parks. The emphasis is on sustainable development, green corridors and high-quality landscaping. That is part of why Noida has also been ranked the cleanest city in medium category cities and 4th cleanest city among cities with less than 1,000,000 people. In 2015, ABP News named it the “Best City in Uttar Pradesh.”

Today, the local administration is clearly still active in shaping the city’s environment. Noida has been selected as a ‘water warrior’ city by the Jal Shakti Ministry for its wastewater reutilisation for irrigation purposes. Under Noida’s jurisdiction, there are eight operational sewage treatment plants with a combined capacity of 411 MLD. That tells you something important about how this city is maintained: even its basic services are part of the urban identity.

Connectivity is another visible layer. Noida is connected by the Noida Metro and Delhi Metro. The Noida Metro’s Aqua Line runs 29.7 kilometres and serves 21 stations, while the Delhi Metro began operating here on 12 November 2009. The Blue Line and Magenta Line link the city into the wider region, and the nearest airport now is Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. A new airport is being built at Jewar, officially named the Noida International Airport, and a first flight validation test of IndiGo’s A320neo aircraft was successfully conducted on 9 December 2024. The airport is slated to be operational by April 2026.
