The story of M G Road, Bengaluru

M G Road is the east-west street that runs from Trinity Circle to Anil Kumble Circle, and it is one of the busiest roads in Bengaluru. The most striking thing about it is how much the city’s public life is packed onto a single corridor: retail stores, food outlets, restaurants, office buildings, shops, theatres and banks all line it.

This road was known as South Parade in the pre-independence era, and it was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Road on 26 February 1948. That change marked the wider moment when colonial street names were being replaced across India with names honouring Mahatma Gandhi.

The road also shows how old and new layers overlap here. An Indian Express account of Bengaluru’s M G Road says that in an 1854 map by J B Pharaoh, the road, then called South Parade Road, was not too different from how it is today, and that two landmarks at its ends were already visible: St Marks Church and the Holy Trinity Church. That same account notes that these churches, built in 1808 and 1851 respectively, were largely visited by British soldiers garrisoned in the city at the time.

If you are standing on the road itself, look for the metro infrastructure that now shapes it. There are two Metro stations on M G Road, the eponymous station and Trinity, and the Bengaluru Metro line through this road connects the eastern part of Bengaluru with the west. The boulevard is being reconstructed after construction of the MG Road Metro station was completed and services launched on 20 October 2011.

The road sits inside the Bangalore Cantonment context described by the Indian Express piece, so what you are looking at is not just a shopping street but part of a long urban spine that has been reworked over time. The same stretch that once went by South Parade now functions as a major business, shopping and entertainment route, and that practical role is still visible in the density of buildings and the flow of people using it.

If you want to orient yourself on foot, the two end points are the easiest anchors: Trinity Circle on one side and Anil Kumble Circle on the other. From here, the most immediate things to notice are the metro stations and the continuous line of shops and buildings that give M G Road its present-day character.
