The story of Krishnarajapuram
Krishnarajapuram is an eastern suburb of Bengaluru, and the old road to Madras runs through it. If you want the quickest mental picture of the place, think of a settlement built around movement, water, and old layers of local history rather than a single monument.
The area was named after Krishnaraja Wadiyar III, who ruled the provincial state of Mysuru from 1799 to 1869. Encyclopedias also place it within Bengaluru East taluk, and it is a Karnataka Legislative Assembly constituency. That means this is not just a neighbourhood on the edge of the city; it is also an administrative center with central and state government offices.
What gives the place its historical depth is the older village history behind the modern suburb. KR Puram had been a small hamlet on the way to Kolar, and a Ganga-period connection is mentioned here during Sripurusha. Hero stones or Veeragallu found at Krishnarajapuram town are part of that past. Near the Mahabaleshwara temple complex, an inscription preserved in the Bangalore museum mentions Hosauru and Mareya’s sacrifices for the protection of the village. That is one of the clearest surviving traces tied to the locality’s older name and community memory.
The name was changed to Krishnapura from around 1816 during the Wodeyar period, and later usage settled into the forms Krishnarajapura, Krishnarajapuram, KR Puram, and K.R. Pura. One practical thing to notice while you are here is how the suburb still sits among water landmarks: Vengayyana Lake is in the heart of the area, and Yele Mallappa Shetty Lake lies just outside the eastern limits. There are also a couple of ancient temples near the village lake, and KR Puram hosts one of the oldest markets in the city, where farmers from Kolar and Mulbagal sell their produce.
If you look around, the place is best understood as an old settlement absorbed into Bengaluru, but still marked by inscriptions, lakes, and market life.
