The story of Krishna Matha Udupi

Krishna Matha Udupi is a Hindu temple and Dvaita matha in Udupi, Karnataka, best known for its shrine to Krishna and for the living monastic tradition that runs it. The matha area resembles a living ashram, a holy place for daily devotion and living.

The Krishna Matha was founded by the Vaishnavite saint Madhvacharya in the 13th century. He was the founder of the Dvaita school of Vedanta, and the temple belongs to that Vaishnavite world. A striking part of the story is the image of Krishna itself: Madhvacharya found the vigraha in a large ball of gopichandana, and in his Tantrasara Sangraha he placed it initially facing east. Devotion to the saint Kanakadasa is linked with the deity turning Pashchimabhimukha, facing west. Devotees still have darshan through the inner window known as the Navagraha Kindi and the outer window known as the Kanakana Kindi, which is decorated by an arch named after Kanakadasa.

The temple is part of a larger sacred setting. Surrounding the Shri Krishna Temple are several temples, including the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple, which is over a thousand years old. That wider complex helps explain why Krishna Matha feels like more than a single shrine: it sits within a longstanding religious landscape.

Its living ritual life is organized through the Paryaya festival, held once every two years, when temple management passes to the next Ashta Matha. Each matha is headed by a swami, and the Paryaya tradition has completed 500 years as of 2021. Festivals such as Makara Sankranthi, Ratha Sapthami, Madhva Navami, Hanuman Jayanthi, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Navarathi Mahotsava, Madhva Jayanti, Vijaya Dashami, Naraka Chathurdashi, Deepavali, and Geetha Jayanthi are celebrated by Paryaya Mutt every year.

Krishna Matha Udupi is also a State Protected Monument, so its religious role and its heritage value are formally recognized together.
