The story of Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar is an assembly of stone-built astronomical instruments, and the thing that matters most when you stand here is that they were designed to be used with the naked eye. This Jaipur observatory is the most significant, most comprehensive, and best preserved of India’s historic observatories, and UNESCO describes it as an astronomical observation site built in the early 18th century.

It was built by Sawai Jai Singh, the Rajput ruler who had a keen interest in mathematics, architecture and astronomy. He commissioned five Jantar Mantars across North India, and the ones at Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura were completed between 1724 and 1735. The purpose of the instruments was practical: to compile astronomical tables and to predict the times and movements of the Sun, Moon and planets. In other words, this was not decorative science. It was a working place for observation, calculation and record-making.

The name itself points to that purpose. “Jantra” comes from yantra, meaning instrument, and “Mantar” from mantrana, meaning consult or calculate. The name Jantar Mantar is at least 200 years old, appearing in an account from 1803. Jaipur’s own observatory was completed in 1734, and by 1735 at least 23 astronomers were employed here. During that period, the changing political climate made Jaipur replace Delhi as Sawai Jai Singh’s main observatory, and it remained his central observatory until his death in 1743.

What you are looking at is a collection of 19 astronomical instruments, or a set of some 20 main fixed instruments in UNESCO’s description. Among them are the Samrat Yantra, Jai Prakash Yantra, Disha Yantra, Rama Yantra, Chakra Yantra, Rashiwalya Yantra, Dingash Yantra and Utaansh Yantra. The largest and most famous is the Samrat Yantra, the world’s largest stone sundial. UNESCO notes that these are monumental masonry examples of known instruments, but with specific characteristics of their own, and that they embody architectural and instrumental innovations.

If you look for the Samrat Yantra, you’ll see the giant triangular gnomon at its centre, with quadrants on either side. Britannica describes it as an equinoctial sundial, with the hypotenuse parallel to the Earth’s axis, and says that a skilled observer could use it to determine the time of day and the declination of the Sun and other heavenly bodies to about 20 seconds. That is the boldest single object here, and it tells you what this place was built to do.

The observatories followed the tradition of Ptolemaic positional astronomy, allowing astronomers to observe celestial bodies directly with the naked eye. This site was meant for that exact kind of work, and the instruments were part of a larger scientific culture at court. UNESCO calls it an expression of the astronomical skills and cosmological concepts of the court of a scholarly prince at the end of the Mughal period.

Jantar Mantar has also had a long conservation history. Jantar Mantar in Jaipur was restored several times during British colonial rule, declared a national monument in 1948, restored again in 2006, managed under the Archeological Sites and Monuments Act of Rajasthan since 1961, and protected as a National Monument of Rajasthan since 1968. That matters because the monument you see today is not just old; it has been kept in use as a heritage site and carefully maintained as part of Rajasthan’s protected monuments.

The practical thing to notice while you’re here is that this is an open-air park of fixed instruments, so the arrangement of the site is the experience. Walk slowly between the masonry forms and read the space between them as part of the observatory itself. The site is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and the last ticket is issued at 6:30 PM.

On either side of the gnomon is a quadrant of a circle, parallel to the plane of the equator. The instrument can be used with an accuracy of about 20 seconds by a skilled observer to determine the time of day, and the declination of the Sun and the other heavenly bodies.
