The story of Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is the palace standing in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, and the thing that catches your eye is that it sits like an artificial island in the water rather than on the shore.

Britannica says it was originally constructed around 1699 by Sawai Jai Singh of Amber as a duck-hunting lodge rather than a royal residence. The building and the lake around it were later renovated and enlarged in the mid-18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I. That means the place you see today belongs to more than one phase of work, with the palace tied closely to the lake that surrounds it.

The name itself is simple: Jal Mahal means Water Palace. It is one of Jaipur’s historical palaces, but unlike a typical city palace, this one is defined by its setting in the lake.

In the early 2000s, a public-private partnership project worth ₹1.5 billion was launched to restore Jal Mahal, rehabilitate Man Sagar Lake, and develop the surrounding area. The work included dredging approximately 500,000 m³ of silt from the lakebed, reusing that material for check dams, embankments, and three artificial nesting grounds for migratory birds. City sewage drains were also realigned, untreated discharge from the Brahmpuri and Nagtalai drains was diverted into a treatment plant, and secondary effluent was routed through a 4-hectare artificial wetland. An in-situ bioremediation system with 140 diffusers and 5 air compressors was installed to aerate the lake bed.

A 1 km lakefront promenade was also added, so the practical thing to do here is look not just at the palace but at the lake edge and the restored setting around it. The lower four-story interior of the palace remains closed to general visitors, so what you can read most clearly is the building’s position in the water and the work done to bring the lake back around it.
