The story of Faridabad

Faridabad began as a city made to guard a road. In 1607, Shaikh Farīd, treasurer to the Mughal emperor Jahangir, founded it to protect the Grand Trunk Road between Delhi and Agra, and that practical purpose still tells you something important about the place you’re standing in: this was never just a settlement that grew by accident, but a planned stop on a major route.

The city also sits inside a much older landscape. Faridabad lies in the cultural region of Braj and Mewat, and nearby Tilpat, then called Tilprastha, was one of the five villages demanded by Pandavas to avert a disastrous war. That gives the wider area a place in both history and tradition, even though the city itself was founded much later.

After partition in 1947, Faridabad changed sharply. Under the leadership of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, over 50000 refugees were resettled here, and that revived the economy and social life of the city. Britannica adds another later phase: a project for Pakistani refugee resettlement and light industrial development was initiated in 1950. So the modern city you see today was shaped not only by Mughal-era origins, but by resettlement and industry in Independent India.

Administrative status also changed over time. Britannica dates its constitution as a municipality to 1867. Later, it was initially part of Gurgaon district and was made an independent district on 15 August 1979. That sequence matters because it shows Faridabad becoming more formally urban long after its founding.

What makes the city especially notable today is its scale and role in the Delhi region. Faridabad is the most populous city in Haryana and one of the major satellite cities around Delhi. It is part of the Delhi National Capital Region and, in the 2021 Delhi Regional Plan, part of the Central National Capital Region or Delhi metropolitan area. The Government of India included it in the second list of Smart Cities Mission on 24 May 2016.

Industry is central here. Faridabad is a major industrial hub of Haryana, and the city’s listed products include tractors, motorcycles, switch gears, refrigerators, shoes, tyres and garments. Henna production is also mentioned as a feature of the agricultural sector. So this is a place where settlement, transport and manufacturing have long been tied together.

For archaeology, the most striking discovery is not in the urban core but on the outskirts. Archaeologists found cave paintings and tools from the Paleolithic period in the Mangar Bani hill forest. These paintings are estimated to be one lac years old, and they are described as possibly the largest in the Indian subcontinent. A later proposal sought protected status for a 5,000-hectare area in Faridabad’s Mangar where those cave paintings, rock shelters and tools were found, with a preliminary notification under the Punjab Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964 being considered. That is the strongest clue to what serious archaeologists think this landscape contains.

If you’re thinking practically as you stand here, the city is well connected. Faridabad lies on the broad gauge of the New Delhi – Mumbai Line, and Delhi Metro’s Violet Line connects it with Delhi. There are 11 metro stations in the Faridabad corridor: Sarai, NHPC Chowk, Mewala Maharajpur, Sector 28, Badkhal Mor, Old Faridabad, Neelam Chowk Ajronda, Bata Chowk, Escorts Mujesar, Sant Surdas (Sihi) and Raja Nahar Singh. The extension to Faridabad was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 6 Sepetmeber 2015.

One more thing to notice is how the city keeps expanding. The newly developed residential and industrial part between the Agra Canal and the Yamuna River is commonly called Greater Faridabad, or Neharpar, with industrial sectors from 66 to 74 and residential sectors from 75 to 89. That gives you a very clear sense of Faridabad today: a historic road town turned industrial metropolis, still growing at its edges.

In brief

It is one of the major satellite cities around Delhi and is located 284 kilometres south of the state capital, Chandigarh. The river Yamuna forms the eastern district boundary with Uttar Pradesh. The Government of India included it in the second list of Smart Cities Mission on 24 May 2016. As per the 2021 Delhi Regional Plan, Faridabad is a part of the Central National Capital Region or Delhi metropolitan area.
