Bharatpur is a city in Rajasthan that once served as the capital of the Bharatpur State, and it is now the administrative headquarters of Bharatpur District and of Bharatpur Division. It became a municipal corporation with 65 wards in 2014, so you are standing in a place that is still a working urban centre, not just a historic name on a map.

Its deeper past goes back far beyond the state era: Bharatpur was part of the Matsya Kingdom, one of the sixteen ancient Mahājanapadas. That long span of history is part of why the city’s name carries both political and cultural weight today.

What many visitors come for now is the mix of heritage and nature around the city. Keoladeo national park is the best-known draw, and the old landmarks listed for a visit here include Lohagarh Fort, Bayana, Ganga Mandir, Banke Bihari temple, Kishori Mahal and Laxman Mandir. Those names tell you a lot about Bharatpur’s public identity: forts, temples, and a protected natural landscape all sit close together in the city’s story.

The city’s living culture is marked by Braj Holi Festival, Jaswant exhibition and fair during Dussehra, and Numaish exhibition and fair. If you are here at the right time, those gatherings are the moments when Bharatpur feels most clearly like a regional centre rather than a monument alone.

There is also archaeology just outside the city. Recent excavations at Noh, about 6.43 km. from the city of Bharatpur on the Agra road, revealed five cultural periods of ceramic industry: ochre coloured ware, black and red ware, painted grey ware, north black polished ware, and a Sunga-Kushana Phase. Among the finds were terracotta female figurines, a Kushana bowl inscribed in Bra/jmi characters, and a spotted red-sandstone Buddhist sculpture of early Kushana date depicting four Maitreyas. Those discoveries show that this area was occupied and used across multiple periods, not just in the era of the city’s later fame.

A useful practical point while you are here is that Bharatpur sits 56 km (35 mi) west of Agra of Uttar Pradesh and 36 km (22 mi) from Mathura of Uttar Pradesh, so it often functions as a stop between major destinations.
